Motivational speaking can be a very challenging career, but it is one that is inspiring as well. Motivational speakers, also known as change agents, are known to impact the lives of people. They are hired to inspire, encourage, and change peoples' lifestyles on a daily basis. But what makes a good change agent or motivational speaker? Certainly, not just anyone can become one. Not only does it take practice and effort, but one must possess certain qualities. In this article, we will discuss these qualities along with how they can be achieved.
In order to be a successful change consultant, one must always be confident. Confidence is not just about being able to speak in front of a crowd. You must have confidence in your beliefs and what you have to say. If you don't feel confident, then how are you going to inspire people? Confidence is probably the most important trait to have as a change agent.
Another important quality to have as change agent is experience. Many Change Agents begin their careers by talking at schools, churches, fairs, or other community gatherings. Start off with a small group. It's not a good idea to talk to a college class of 100 students or more. Doing so will probably intimidate you. See how you feel in front of a small group of people. If you feel comfortable, then maybe motivational speaking is for you.
You should also convey energy and emotion in your speeches. As a change agent, it's important to let your audience feel what you feel. You can do this by practicing in front of your mirror. Do you speak in a monotone voice? Do your facial expressions change? If not, then you need to practice speaking with more feeling. It's always best to observe other speakers so you can get a better understanding. Look at videos of Martin Luther King and John F. Kennedy. Focus on their expressions and their movements. Try to emulate that in your speeches.
If you can crack it, motivational speaking is an extremely rewarding career. Always be sure to speak with emotion and energy. You can do this by practicing at home, with your family, or in front of a small group of people. Also, observe other motivational speakers and take notes on their actions. Lastly, you need to have confidence. Without, no one will believe you and you won't be able to inspire your audience.
